Phone manufacturers have found themselves involved in a lot of high-stakes battles lately, including the races for the world’s thinnest gadget, the snappiest processor or the highest resolution display.
But if there’s one area we haven’t seen enough innovation and development in, that’s definitely the battery life, with the battle being more or less left at Motorola’s discretion. The Razr Maxx and Maxx HD, with their 3,300 mAh batteries, are the clear leaders in the autonomy department, but they still feel like they can be pushed further forward.

Both handhelds can get running times of 12, 15 or even 20 hours between charges in certain conditions, but is that really enough? Not for many folks, who are craving for a super-phone capable of a 24 or even 48 hour autonomy.
That’s where the Lenovo P770 comes in, boasting a record 3,500 mAh battery while not exactly having the high-end specs necessary to drain the “juice” out of it very fast. The P770 is not a confirmed device, so all info about it should be taken with a pinch of salt, although we have a couple of legit-looking leaked pics confirming its existence.


One of the photos even shows off the monster battery in all its splendor, so we can definitely start dreaming. The phone is moreover rumored to come at the low, low price of 1,700 Yuan ($270) in China, so what could go wrong?
Unfortunately, a lot of things. First off, I can’t shake the feeling that something’s off here. I mean, Lenovo is not a no-name Chinese manufacturer, so why would a super-battery phone like this be so cheap?
Secondly, a humongous battery doesn’t guarantee a great autonomy and it could give birth to other inconveniences, such as an overly robust and bulky figure. Finally, do we really want a possibly record-breaking device like this to be a mid-ranger from all other aspects besides the battery capacity?
Oh right, I almost forgot. The rumored spec sheet of the P770 includes a dual-core 1.2 GHz MediaTek MT6577 CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a 4.5-inch 960 x 540 pix res display, and an 8 MP rear-facing shooter. No words on availability, while Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is said to come either on board or as an update “soon after the launch”.
Excited or not really? Could someone like Lenovo do what Samsung or HTC have been unable to? Would you buy the P770 if all the phone had going for it was the battery life? And finally, should we expect other handhelds to pop up with 3,500 or even 4,000 mAh batteries?
