The latest predictions from analyst Gartner discuss the meteoric rise of personal mobile computing devices. It is forecasting 821 million smartphones and tablets will be sold worldwide by the end of 2012 and that figure is going to rise to 1.2 billion in 2013. For business, the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) trend is winning out and mobile devices are proving more practical for employees than traditional PCs or laptops.

Gartner estimates that businesses will buy 13 million tablets by the end of the year and expects that figure to hit 53 million in 2016. There are also expectations that Android and iOS will continue to replace RIM’s BlackBerry platform in the enterprise. Interestingly Gartner sees business as the driving force for Windows 8 and expects Microsoft to claim third place in the tablet market by 2016.
Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, also spoke about Android saying, “Today the wide range of brands and price points that the Android ecosystem is offering is winning over users. While Apple remains the heartbeat by which the market moves, Google has rapidly become its archrival.”

In the business world that translates to the prediction that 56 percent of all smartphones bought by businesses in North America and Europe will be Android by 2016, which is a major increase over the 34 percent Android claimed in 2012.
So, to sum up in a nutshell: people, especially businesses, are going to buy more tablets and smartphones next year and Android will continue to fight Apple for the number one spot, as Microsoft will steadily grow, and RIM will disappear.
