Qualcomm Q4 and FY 2012 financial results: Record numbers, but growth is slowing in the west

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---qualcommceo.jpg

Qualcomm has just published their Q4 and full year 2012 financial results. In case you’re wondering how that works, they operate on a fiscal calendar, not the actual calendar. Back to the numbers, they’re absolutely mind bending: Q4 revenues were up 18% year on year; full year 2012 revenues were up 28% year on year. MSM volumes, meaning the Snapdragon chips that have an integrated SoC and cellular component, hit 141 million in Q4, up 11% year on year. For the full year that number is even higher, at a whopping 22%. All this despite the problems Qualcomm faced during the summer due to TSMC’s inability to meet demand for 28 nanometer parts.

Not all is rosy however. Shipments of 3G and 4G devices to developed markets, meaning Japan, North America, and Europe, are up just 4% year over year. It makes sense when you think about it. What does nearly everyone in the developed world have in common? Chances are they likely own a smartphone. Qualcomm’s Chief Financial Officer, William Keitel, told Retuers:
“Despite a somewhat lackluster world economy and despite very intense competition, we’re pretty optimistic on our financial outlook for 2013.”
Cheery words indeed, but the company is forecasting revenue growth for fiscal 2013 to be anywhere between 20% to 26%, which is obviously lower than the 28% that they just reported.
Taking a step back, why is Qualcomm where they are today? Because they had the foresight to develop the Snapdragon platform. Companies used to have to buy several components from multiple vendors and then spend time integrating and testing said parts. Qualcomm basically slapped all those bits and bobs into one product that their customers, the handset makers, could use to get a phone out to market in almost no time.
Who’s Qualcomm’s competition? Samsung, who makes their own system on chip platform known as Exynos. That and there’s Intel. Today they might not be a big player, but just wait a few years.

New Sony C6603 Yuga photos leak, it’s an all glass 5 inch 1080p superphone

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---sy1.jpg

We’ve been writing about the Sony Yuga for what feels like months. It’s allegedly going to be the Japanese smartphone maker’s flagship device for 2013. It’ll have a quad core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, just like the Nexus 4, 2 GB of RAM, again, just like the Nexus 4, and a 12 megapixel camera. What makes it special is the display: 5 inches diagonal with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. So far we only know of one legitimate smartphone with that display, the HTC J Butterfly.
That’s going to launch in Japan by the end of year, and we have a strong feeling that it’s going to be announced next week on Verizon Wireless as the Droid DNA.

Today’s “news”, if you even want to call it that, is that a Swiss website called Android-Schweiz has somehow managed to get several photos of the Yuga in the wild. First thing you’ll immediately notice about the phone is that it uses glass on both the front and the back of the device. The sleek design sadly comes at a cost, there’s no removable battery. The power button is also quite … interesting. It’s side mounted, like on a Samsung smartphone, but it’s gigantic and made out of a shiny plastic that looks incredibly tacky. Here’s hoping Sony decides to go with something a little bit more classy before they start producing retail units.

Now as for the questions you really care about: How much is the Yuga going to cost? We have no idea. When will you be able to buy it? Again, we have no idea. Chances are it’s going to be announced either at CES in January or MWC in February, and then it’ll land on store shelves in March or April. That’s typically what Sony does. And what version of Android is it going to run? These new photos say 4.1 Jelly Bean.

DARPA wants to give future Soldiers Predator vision using Android phones

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Predator.jpg

Every now and then, someone comes up with an idea so absurd that it’s hard to tell whether it’s awesome or just fiction. The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, better known as DARPA, recently had one of those idea. For the concept, DARPA wants to give Soldiers on the battlefield unheard of vision and communication.

Here’s how it works. They want to combine their Pixel Network for Dynamic Visualization, otherwise known as PIXNET, with some cool Android gadgets to give Soldiers an advantage in sight on the battlefield.
According to Yahoo! Finance, the idea was to strap an Android phone on a Soldier’s arm. It would be used to process information from a high tech camera on the helmet. This information would then be fed into a military version of Google Glasses. The result would be near-Predator vision, to include HD vision, near-infrared, infrared, and other forms of sight.
That just sounds incredibly cool. Soldiers having the ability to see through smoke, the night time, and other potentially hazardous conditions would give them an edge on the battlefield. Not to mention it could save quite a few lives. Plus, who wouldn’t want to have the option to use a technology comparable to Predator?

So this “Predator Vision” project from DARPA just helps Soldiers see better?

While that is the coolest feature in this project, it isn’t the only feature. DARPA also plans to use this set up to connect Soldiers to one another while on the battlefield. An example that Yahoo! Finance gave was the ability for leaders to dial into a specific Solder’s equipment and see the battle in real time.
The combination of quick information sharing and Predator vision makes this one of DARPA’s most bold projects. There have been others like it, but they were both expensive and bulky. If this solution becomes viable, it’ll be an edge every military is going to want to have. Is this technology worth looking into? Let us know your thoughts.

Sony Xperia TX and Sony Xperia T get Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 with new media features

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Sony-XPERIA-tx-gx.jpg

Sony has announced software upgrades for its Xperia T and Xperia TX handsets. The company has released  the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) firmware update, which includes a host of features leading to key media improvements. The firmware update will be rolled out gradually, starting with Europe and Asia.

The update also brings on the following features:
  • Screen Mirroring: This feature enables users to wirelessly mirror the Xperia T/TX screen to a TV screen via WiFi Miracast, a standard which connects compatible handsets to compatible TVs. You can now enjoy your pictures, videos, games or browse the web, all on your TV straight from any of the two handsets.
  • Extended Standby: This feature increases the standby time of the two handsets by almost four times by automatically killing the data connection and rendering most of the battery-consuming apps inactive when in sleep mode. Phone calls and regular messages will still go through and the devices resume normal functionality once the screen is touched.
  • HD Voice: This feature, available on the Xperia T only, lets the user enjoy an improved sound quality during calls, as the technology filters distracting background noise.
  • Sony Media Applications: Sony has made a few changes to the media applications to provide users with a richer experience: movies can be viewed from the dashboard, the Walkman interface gets dynamic colors matching album arts while the Album app now takes advantage of the Mobile Bravia Engine.
Coming from Sony, this seems to be a pretty refreshing upgrade. See anything you like?

AT&T investing $14 billion in LTE network upgrades

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---att-4g-lightspeed-600x222.jpg

The race to have the biggest 4G coverage is heating up now, as AT&T has just announced they are getting ready to invest $14 billion in their LTE network. Currently, Verizon is leading the way in LTE deployment and speed, but AT&T might be able to change that by 2014.

The plan emphasizes the growth AT&T is getting ready to achieve. They are expecting to cover over 300 million Americans by 2014, which according to the company, is “99 percent of all customer location.” Now, before AT&T is able to make the needed changes and upgrades, they will need the FCC to approve and release additional spectrum, which might be a harder task than simply asking nicely.
Randall Stephenson, AT&T CEO had the following to say about this plan:
This is a major commitment to invest in 21st Century communications infrastructure for the United States and bring high-speed Internet connectivity — 4G LTE mobile and wireline IP broadband — to millions more Americans. We have the opportunity to improve AT&T’s revenue growth and cost structure for years to come, and create substantial value for shareowners.
Verizon AT&T 4G LTE
The end result is that, hopefully, users will have a choice between AT&T’s huge LTE 4G network and similar LTE networks offered by the competition, including T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon – all four major U.S. mobile operators are investing in 4G LTE technology, with T-Mobile being the last one to join the party.

Sprint Galaxy Note 2 update available, brings multi-window feature not Android 4.2

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---galaxy-note-21(1).jpg

Some of those Sprint customers that are already rocking a Galaxy Note 2 may not have the multi-window feature enabled on their shiny new phablet – an issue spotted with other Galaxy Note 2 as well, but an issue that can be fixed with an update.

And Sprint has just such an update available for you at this time, software version L900VPALJC that fixes various issues and enables the expected feature. Here’s the changelog of this update, as posted by Sprint:
Samsung Galaxy Note II Software Update – L900VPALJC
Enhancements/Fixes
  • GPS lock settings can be defaulted by corporate device administrators
  • Emails go to Outbox when in no coverage area or airplane mode
  • Text message notification will beep while in a voice call
  • Multi Window View feature to run two apps on the screen at the same time
But don’t expect any miracles! We’re not looking at Android 4.2 Jelly Bean here, and it’s too early to talk about anyway given that Android 4.2 is not even out yet for current Nexus devices.
Instead it’s a minor update that will improve your Galaxy Note 2 experience. Did you get it already?

Microsoft Surface Tablet vs latest iPad vs Google Nexus 7; which one makes their manufacturers the most money?

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---microsoft-surface-3.jpg

The tablet market has exploded over the last year. What began as a niche market with expensive tablets has evolved into companies making tablets that people on budgets can afford. We went from $700 tablets to $300 seemingly overnight. The kicker is that the $300 tablets are still amazing pieces of technology. With such low prices, it brings one to wonder which tablet actually makes their manufacturer the most money. So let’s take a look at the flagship devices from various mobile operating systems. The iPad, the Nexus 7, and the Microsoft Surface.

According to IHS, the Nexus 7 costs $152 to build. That’s pretty cheap compared to the others. However, the Nexus 7 also sells for less than the others. With the $199 model and the $249 model, the Nexus 7 brings in anywhere from a $45 to $100 profit.
IHS puts the cost of the iPad from $316 to $408 depending on which model you buy. For the 16GB WiFi model, the price is around $500. So the profit made from that is just under $200. For the 64GB WiFi and 4G model, they make about $300.
When we first wrote about the Microsoft Surface, it was estimated that the cost was $271. However, back then we believed the tablet would go in the $300-$400 range. We were mistaken, as the Microsoft Surface currently goes for around $700 for the 32GB model. IHS has a new estimate that the Microsoft Surface costs $284 in total. That means that the Surface makes over $400 per sale.

So the Microsoft Surface makes the most money per tablet?

According to current prices on Google and IHS, yes. Each company does go at it from different angles, though. Google and their Nexus tablets aim more for Google cloud services like Google Music and Google Drive. The cost of those to the consumer helps make up for the really cheap prices.
The Microsoft Surface tablet and the iPad are direct competitors. Same price range, same relative tablet features and specs. Where Microsoft wins is the cost of materials. While the Microsoft Surface costs $280 to make, the lowest range of iPad costs $300, with the most expensive model putting Apple back $400 a piece.
So the question really is, which company has the best strategy? iPad and Microsoft Surface tablets go for luxury value. Google goes for the more financially frugal among us, but gives us limited storage to push their other services. Who does it best? Let us know what you think in the comments.

An anatomy of a Google downtime: how much do we rely on online services?

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Android-Broken-w600.jpeg

The unimaginable has happened. Google went offline shortly this November 6th. Actually, Google does experience limited outages one time or another, although given Google’s reputation as a big technology company, this kind of thing is usually considered unthinkable by users. Can’t access your Gmail for just five minutes, and you’re probably pissed. What more if Google searches or other services don’t work?

Especially now that our mobile devices are always connected and reliant on Google services, any outage or downtime will be easily noticed. Now that businesses are moving their operations to the cloud — such as with Google Apps — any downtime will lead to decreased productivity and even lost revenues.
A couple of days ago, Google had a limited outage of about 27 minutes in some regions. According to network engineer Tom Paseka, who wrote an explanation at the Cloudflare blog, this was due to “route leakage.” Tom writes that the Internet’s “glue” is basically built on trust. The Border Gateway Protocol, which announces which IP addresses belong to each autonomous network, supposedly establishes routes from one network to another. In the case of the Google outage, an upstream provider based in Indonesia had a glitch, which then spread across the Internet at large, due to the wrong routing information being sent to other providers.
Said upstream providers were quickly notified of the situation, and were able to address the issue. In all but three minutes of the fix, the Internet went back to normal for the affected parties. Tom estimates that about 5% of Internet users were affected, mostly from Hong Kong and nearby countries.
This was not a malicious hacking attempt, says Moratel, which was the provider in question. Rather, it was a hardware glitch.
All this underscores the vulnerability of our connected systems in the light of Internet outages, whether these are enterprise systems or consumer devices that rely on information from the cloud. With everything going to the cloud — our emails, documents, messaging services, and whatnot — any outage can lead to severe repercussions. Or at the very least, we could be subject to inconveniences.
This leads me  to ask. If Google were to go offline for a day, would you be able to cope? Will you miss anything on your smartphone or tablet if you can’t get online, or can you get by with doing stuff on the device itself, independent of an Internet connection?

Nyko releases PlayPad controller for Android

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Nyko.jpg

As Android games become more and more like traditional home video games, players are discovering that touch screen controls just don’t have the same tactile comfort offered by console video games. That’s about to change, thanks to the Nyko PlayPad, a $40 Android game controller which connects to your device over Bluetooth.

Much like the MOGA, the PlayPad attempts to make mobile gaming more accessible by providing a controller that is familiar to all gamers. Additionally, The PlayPad Pro (pictured above) features a layout near identical to that of an Xbox 360 controller.
The PlayPad also includes several different hardware modes that make the controller compatible with multiple types of games and devices, including iOS titles that support iCade. Unfortunately, the PlayPad does require Android 3.0 or higher, leaving plenty of gamers with Gingerbread devices out of luck. Nyko has also released an application called Playground which allows gamers to map touch controls to the PlayPad, but the application is only compatible with Android 4.0 devices.
At $40, the Nyko PlayPad gives you a capable controller for a great price. At this time, it appears that Nyko is charging the same price for both the PlayPad and the PlayPad Pro, and there’s no telling how long this will last. The PlayPad controller is currently available from Gamestop and Amazon.

Virgin Media launches TV Anywhere for PCs and Apple devices, Android to follow next year

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Virgin-Media.jpg

TV viewing has stopped being just about a classic TV set and a boring living room for a while, with countless new devices across the world now supporting live streaming of TV channels, as well as many other ways of juggling with video content.

The latest service to allow TV consumers to enjoy their favorite content anytime and anyway they want is Virgin TV Anywhere. Launched by Virgin Media in the UK, this provides Brits with access to up to 45 channels (for now), as well as to 4,000 hours of on-demand services.
Unfortunately, the number of devices supported by Virgin TV Anywhere is not as generous as we would have expected, with Android being by far the most notable absence from the list. Virgin Media’s disrespect to our favorite mobile OS is that more hurtful when thinking that there’s a TV Anywhere dedicated app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
Windows-based PCs and laptops, but also Apple’s Macs have their own browser-based portals, while UK Android users will just have to wait until “sometime next year” to get their own app. Not cool, Virgin, not cool at all!

Still, if you’re not planning on using TV Anywhere on an Android, you should know that you’ll need a Virgin TV subscription to access the service on your desktop or laptop, and an additional TiVo box to make it work on your mobile device.
Out of the total 45 channels available, there are only 25 supported by both the mobile app and desktop browser for live streaming, including ESPN, British Eurosport, CNN and Cartoon Network. Sky Sports 1 through 4 and all the Sky Movies channels are only accessible on laptops and computers, while the sole UK terrestrial channel included is Channel 5 (both on PCs and via the app).
Sky On Demand is the pack leader when it comes to on-demand content, but you’ll also be able to watch past programs from BBC or ITV. Other perks for mobile users include the ability to record and manage favorite shows remotely, rate programs with a Thumbs Up/Down feature, share what you’re watching on Facebook or Twitter, and even use your devices as remote controls for your TiVo boxes.

Virgin TV Anywhere only lets users register up to two devices for the service, which can however be changed monthly. You can therefore make use of the service on your iPhone and Mac for one month, and then you can access it on a PC and iPad the next month, and so on and so forth.
Finally, let’s also mention that, besides the somewhat limited content on the go and the lack of Android support, Virgin TV Anywhere has another major weakness. The service doesn’t support 3G streaming for mobile devices, so you’ll need Wi-Fi at all times.
All in all, this is great news for anyone craving for a solid Sky Go alternative, but Virgin Media has a lot of extra work to do to make TV Anywhere as cool as it could (or should) be. Do you guys agree? Are you as pissed as we are that there isn’t an Android app “yet”?

AT&T gets a hefty $700,000 fine for overcharging customers

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---ATT-logo-2.jpg

Aside from making sure that all mobile devices, such as your precious Android smartphones and tablets, won’t spontaneously combust and/or cause immediate health concerns, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also deals with wireless carriers and their often shady practices to try and reap as much profit as they can from customers.

After a long investigation, FCC has found AT&T guilty of duping customers into paying for service that they never asked for in the first place. In light of the decision, AT&T has been asked to pay $700,000 to the federal government. We say it’s a fine, but the statement says it’s a “voluntary payment.”
The story began in the cold November month of 2009, that’s when AT&T made its monthly data plans mandatory for new and existing subscribers. The network promised that some customers would get to keep their old pay-as-you-go data plans, namely smartphone customers and those who opted to disable the data altogether.
Problems started when the very same group found out that they’d been unknowingly moved to the new monthly data plans, which according to the FCC cost them $25 to $30 a month more. The ensuing chorus of complaints was what led FCC to the matter.
But don’t worry though, aside from the $700,000 fine, AT&T has agreed to refund customers for the overcharges. As expected, AT&T also said that there’s no real harm done, as it only affected 0.03% of its wireless customers. To be more specific, it only affected those who got a new smartphone “through a warranty or insurance exchange” or moved houses.
The moral of the story: It’s worth paying more attention to the phone bills that you receive every month.

Microsoft expected to release Office Mobile for Android in May 2013

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---office(1).jpg

We have seen plenty of chatter about a Microsoft Office suite for mobile devices. Specifically, Office Mobile for Android. In fact, it was just last month when rumors were calling for the apps to come available for Android in March 2013. And well, it looks like today has brought some new information. Not to mention, a release timeframe that is not in March.

The key here, this latest round of Office Mobile details are not coming from Microsoft. Instead they are coming by way of the folks at The Verge. They are reporting that “several sources close to Microsoft’s plans” have said that the company will release Office Mobile for Android and iOS in early 2013. Breaking this down a bit further and we learn that the iOS release is expected first, in February or early March, with Android following a few months later, in May.

Otherwise, in terms of details, it looks like Office Mobile will launch as a suite of apps. And even nicer, with a free read-only option. The basic read-only option is expected to include Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and those needing editing will be required to have an Office 365 subscription. No word on the expected price for the editing, however it was noted that the apps “won’t go very far in attempting to replace regular full use of a desktop Office version.”
Bottom line here, it now looks like Android users have about 6-7 months before Office Mobile will arrive. Our question, given the current options available for creating and editing docs, how many users are still waiting for an official Office app from Microsoft? Of course, this is coming from the guy who bought a new notebook about six months back and has yet to install anything of the sort.

New Titanium Backup Pro lets users create flashable ZIP backups

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Titanium-Backup-Pro.jpg

Christmas comes early for folks who seemingly can’t get through one day without flashing the latest available custom ROM on their device, for the Titanium Backup has been updated with a killer feature or two. The latest version of the highly popular Titanium Backup Pro app now gives users the ability to create flashable zip files of their apps and data.

The flashable zips will come in handy and help save a significant amount of time for serial ROM flashers. Instead of doing the usual and rather time-consuming routine of restoring backups of your app and data after a new ROM install, you can now easily flash the ZIP files using recovery instead.
Given that it’s considered as a premium feature, you’ll only find it on the Pro version of Titanium Backup, which means you’re going to have to shell out about $6 to get the app from Google Play. We think it’s worth the admission price.
So, looking forward to give the new feature a try? Or does the price tag stop you from buying the app for now?

ZTE prepping a Windows Phone that could make the Galaxy Note 2 look small

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---zte-windows-phone-superphone.jpg

ZTE recently mentioned that they planned to sell 50 million smartphones in 2013. And while ZTE will probably see a fair amount of sales with Android smartphones, with a goal of 50 million — it may be good to spread the wings a little bit. After all, not everyone wants an Android smartphone. We suspect many of the readers may feel otherwise, but there are some other mobile operating systems that are really nice. One of those, despite not being all that popular, is Windows Phone.

Enter this recently posted image of a ZTE branded Windows Phone smartphone. The image was posted by Lu Qian Hao, who is a marketing chief with ZTE. The image of the phone did arrive with some details, however those same details may have brought some not so good news. You see, the handset is said to be sporting a 5.9-inch (1920 x 1080) Full HD display. This brings the question, Windows Phone 8 does not yet support Full HD displays which means that this handset is most likely running Windows Phone 7. Not to mention, that is a Windows Phone 7 logo on the bottom.
Otherwise, the only other detail given was that the handset will be equipped with DTS audio technology. So there you have it, a Windows Phone device that could challenge the size of the Galaxy Note. The question remains though, is this the real deal or simply a teaser. Otherwise, while the initial reaction would be to poke fun at the size of the display, remember people once did that with the Galaxy Note and look at how well that sold.

Blik Calendar Widget 2.6.1

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---unnamed(15).jpg

2.6.1
> Handle devices that don’t return widget size.
2.6.0
> Performance improvements.
> View(Edit/Delete) menu option under My Events for quick access to full event details with edit and delete functionality (ICS and above).
> Row/Column layouts now use full widget space (Jelly Bean and above).
> Resizeable Row/Column layouts (Jelly Bean and above).
IMPORTANT: Jelly Bean support added starting in version 2.5.1!

full change list: http://android.joeprogrammer.com/blikrelnotes.html
Overview:
A picture is worth a thousand words–see your calendar events as pictures.
Why use a boring calendar widget that only has words when a cool picture can tell the story?
Blik reads your calendar and automatically shows the best picture for each event that describes it without words. The picture is shown, along with the start time and an important word from the event so that you can see what’s coming up on your calendar.
You end up with a quick visual guide to your upcoming events. Your calendar has never been easier to “read”.
The free/trial version of Blik comes with 350+ pictures and 700+ keywords rules.
The Pro version unlocks another 300+ keyword rules so that your calendar events are matched up to pictures even better.
You can create your own keyword rules for single calendar events in the free/trial version and in the Pro version you can create your own keyword rules that apply to all your calendar events.
Check out the Blik Settings screen under the Help section for helpful Tips (like how to subscribe to a holiday calendar).
* English only for now.
Keywords: calendar, agenda, birthday, holiday
Known issue(s):
> Widget appearance preview in Settings for month layout doesn’t draw correctly (it does draw the widget correctly on your homescreen though).
> Facebook events may be displayed with incorrect starting times. Use Blik Advanced Setting value to manually adjust the display for all Facebook start times.
> Facebook declined events will still show up.
> Larger widget sizes can result in out-of-memory crashes.
—=== When DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME changes ===—
If your phone is showing events off by an hour, you may need to power it down and reboot so that your phone picks up the time change from your cell provider.
– Important Note –
If you are having problems with your calendar events not syncing, go to http://android.joeprogrammer.com/blikhelp/synchelp.html for information and instructions on how to correct the problem.

LG Optimus G, Samsung Galaxy Rugby LTE and Samsung ATIV S “coming soon” to Sasktel Canada

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Sasktel-phones.jpg

Regional Canadian carrier Sasktel might still be well behind the nationwide big guys – Rogers, Bell and Telus – in terms of number of subscribers, but when talking about product releases, the gap seems to be closing.

The past few months have definitely been kind to Sasktel customers, who’ve been spoiled with timely releases of the hugely popular Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5, to only name a few. Add that to some very attractive and lucrative unlimited data plans, and you can understand why the network’s numbers should be up.
But the carrier’s opportunely timed launches of late will not end, because three very new handhelds are now advertised as “coming soon”. The LG Optimus G is the leader of the pack, with its 4.7-inch True HD IPS+ display and quad-core S4 Pro CPU, and Sasktel could even manage to undercut all of its competitors with this release.
Rogers, Bell and Telus are all expected to sell the G starting on or around November 13, with pricing being kept under wraps all around.

The Samsung Galaxy Rugby LTE is the second Android phone flaunted by Sasktel as coming soon, but that’s already up for grabs from Bell and Telus. The ruggedized 4-incher is $49 with a three-year contract via Telus and $79.95 at Bell, so Sasktel’s price could range anywhere from $40 to $100.
Finally, the Samsung ATIV S is another unreleased phone confirmed to hit Rogers, Telus, Bell and now Sasktel “by the end of November”. We aren’t that interested in the Windows Phone 8 device to be honest, but if you are, keep an eye on the carriers over the next few weeks.
Besides the three devices, Sasktel has some old scores to settle too, with the Galaxy Note 2 being still unavailable. Are you excited more about Sammy’s new phablet or one of the other phones said to “come soon”?

Sony, LG get certifications for Miracast-standard wireless display mirroring

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---nvidia-tegra-miracast-w600(1).jpg

After Google’s announcement that the upcoming Android 4.2 Jelly Bean platform will include built-in support for wireless display mirroring via Miracast, it seemed only a matter of time until device manufacturers likewise announce support for the standard. According to information gleaned from the Wi-Fi Alliance’s certifications page, LG and Sony are likewise actively pursuing this wireless standard.

Miracast is a standard approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance that enables devices to wirelessly stream video content without the need for a central hub. Because it works through WiFi direct, Miracast-enabled devices can directly communicate with each other. And because it requires standards certifications, it should work across different brands, for as long as these are Miracast certified.
According to a recent listing of certified products on the Wi-Fi Alliance page, a few brands are already submitting their products for inclusion in the standard. The companies are just a limited number at this point, but some brands are noteworthy. For instance, we have the following:
  • LG Electronics, which has listed a media dongle DWD-300
  • Sony, which has listed a USB wireless adapter module
  • Samsung, which has listed its Echo-P Series TV
It’s interesting to note a this time that some of these companies are seeking certification for attachments or add-ons to existing devices. This means support for legacy displays and TVs, which will pave the way for use even on older gadgets. But more importantly, it’s a sign that big consumer brands like Samsung, LG and Sony are serious in supporting the standard on upcoming devices. Soon, new TVs will support wireless display mirroring out of the box.
What’s an even bigger possibility is that Miracast is set to overtake Apple’s own Airplay standard. Airplay theoretically works on any compatible TV set. But there’s a big requirement: you need to plug in an Apple TV in order to stream content from an iPhone, iPod or iPad. With Miracast being adopted as a standard by different brands, we are likely to see wider adoption, with more consumers enjoying display mirroring and streaming on platforms like Android.
If you’re not convinced of the possibilities of wireless display mirroring through the Miracast display standard, you can check out the video we featured before, in which Texas Instruments demonstrated playing a game on a big screen using a tablet for control. We have also started writing about products that support Miracast, including tablets and smartphones.

Sprint acquiring US Cellular Midwest spectrum and customers for $480 million

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---Sprint-Logo-w600(1).jpg

Sprint has agreed to purchase select Midwest markets from US Cellular. This purchase will include spectrum and customers in parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio including the Chicago and St. Louis. The purchase price is $480 million and said to include roughly 585,000 customers. Or in terms of percentages, about 10 percent of the US Cellular customer base.

In terms of spectrum, this is further broken down by market. Sprint will get 20MHz of PCS spectrum from the 1900MHz band for “various” Midwest markets including Chicago, South Bend, Indiana and Champaign, Illinois. The sale will also include 10MHz of PCS spectrum in the St. Louis market.
While this should not affect the customers all that much, there is a downside for those selling US Cellular services and devices in those areas. According to details coming from US Cellular, they will “over time” be closing company and agent-owned stores. In addition, they noted that “upon completion of the transition services period, the majority of the company’s retail, engineering and business support associates in these markets will not be retained. ”
The purchase by Sprint will help them supplement coverage in those areas while they continue the Network Vision upgrade and roll-out 4G LTE. And for those that happen to be a US Cellular customer in an area not mentioned — rest assured in knowing that US Cellular will continue business operations outside of these markets following the closing.
In terms of the closing, this sale is expected to close in mid-2013. Of course, we should also point out that the sale is still subject to approvals by the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission. In other words, while both parties have agreed to the terms, we still need to see the final approvals before we can call this a done deal.

After Radio Shack, Staples and Kmart, we’re now looking at Sam’s Club 2012 Black Friday leaked ad which includes a few Android-related offerings, with one of them being a very interesting proposal for buyers.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is listed at $0.96 for November 23, as you can see in the image above, and while the purchase still requires a new two-year contract, the price is definitely great.

We’re most likely looking at the 16GB Galaxy S3 version here, which will be available “in-club only” in two color options, blue and white. What we don’t know yet, is what carrier or carriers are bundled with this $0.96 Galaxy S3 offer.
Sam’s Club also has two new Galaxy Tab 2 models for you this Black Friday, the 7-inch and 16GB 10-inch Wi-Fi versions that will retail for $179 and $299, respectively. Unlike the Black Friday Galaxy S3 deal that’s going to be available in-store only, interested buyers will be able to order the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Wi-Fi and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 Wi-Fi online as well.
What Android device are you buying this Black Friday season?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, 16GB Nexus 7 tablets get a small price drop with Carphone Warehouse

The holidays are coming and so are the sales. The trick with that is being able to choose the sales that truly benefit you. That being said, UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has recently lowered the pricing on two Android tablets. The models that have been discounted include the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Wi-Fi and the Nexus 7.

The catch, one of these sales is not what we would describe as being super. In fact, the one is more of just saving a few bucks. But hey, why spend money when you don’t have to. That being the case, lets dive in with the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. This is for the 8GB Wi-Fi only model and the price is has been dropped to £149. And for those keeping track, that was previously £199.
Otherwise, the Nexus 7. This is the one that is not all that great. In fact, we may even suggest spending a few extra bucks and not worrying about the sale. Carphone Warehouse has the 16GB model priced at £189, which is a drop from £199. That sounds decent, after all it is a savings. But then we remember that the retailer has the 32GB model priced at £195. In other words, for an additional £6 you can get an additional 16GB of storage space.
So how about it, anyone shopping for an Android tablet? Or any tablet for that matter? Me personally, I have been considering the 3G Nexus 7.

New File Manager with built-in root access added to Jelly Bean-based CM10

http://data.ngheanit.com/imgs5/www.androidfree.us---CM10-File-Manager.jpg

No matter if you’re a skilled hacker, an occasional custom ROM user or a more modest Android lover who’s heard of unofficial replacement firmwares, but hasn’t had the guts to flash one yet, you have to hand it to the CyanogenMod team – they’ve managed to do so much with so little and so quickly.
It seems like only yesterday CM made its first shy steps in the beautiful AOSP universe, with a Froyo-based OS, and now they’re already working hard on providing a strong and reliable Jelly Bean alternative while the ICS-based CM9 is still blowing millions of people’s minds.

We’ve suspected for a while that CM10 was going to be legendary once it was going to be deemed stable, but we’re hearing all sorts of exciting new things that make us think we’re still underestimating the project’s potential.
The latest app to be added to CM10 is CyanogenMod’s own File Manager, which will replace the previously included OI File Manager. This new feature not only looks clean and elegant, but it follows the dev team’s credo by the letter, being “seamless in its implementation, intuitive in its usage and functional to a large group of users”.

CM’s File Manager features a Holo themed UI and allows users to view files and folders in their Android devices as icons, in a list or detailed list. The three different access modes are however the highlight of this new app, making sure that the File Manager will suit everyone’s needs, from “professional” rooters to less skilled individuals in the software tweaking department.
You’ll therefore start in safe mode, which will forbid inexperienced users from deleting important files or folders, and if you feel up to it you can then either choose the prompt user or root access mode. The first will warn you every time you’re trying to do something dangerous, while the second will leave you do whatever crosses your mind.
Cool, eh? What’s even cooler is the File Manager will be added to all CM10 devices starting with the next nightly builds, while if you want to try the app by itself you can get it from here or here. Be careful though, because it should only work on rooted AOSP-based Jelly Bean devices for now.
