Dato che i Google Glass, almeno formalmente, sono ancora in fase di sperimentazione, il software dei Google Glass subisce degli aggiornamenti importanti quasi ogni mese.
Qualche settimana fa, vi avemo descritto l’aggiornamento del software Glass per migliorare la qualità della fotocamera, ma oggi, invece, parliamo di un aggiornamento molto più corposo, nome in codice EX6.
Oltre a numerosi migliorie della fotocamera, l’aggiornamento software dei Glass ha implementato la possibilità di aggiungere messaggi personalizzati quando si condivide una immagine nel web (il tutto ovviamente con comando vocale)
Grazie all’aggiornamento EX6, oltretutto, è stata aggiunta la funzione (segreta) che permette ai Glass di riconoscere le canzoni tramite audio, come fa Shazam. Ne abbiamo parlato qui.
Gli aggiornamenti del firmware dei Google Glass, per nostra fortuna, si aggiornano in automatico e in background. Dato che, presumibilmente, i nostri Glass saranno sempre connessi alla rete, Google invierà gli aggiornamenti in modo silenzioso, che verranno scaricati e installati in background senza infastidire o rallentare l’utente.

Qualcomm has just published their Q4 and full year 2012 financial results. In case you’re wondering how that works, they operate on a fiscal calendar, not the actual calendar. Back to the numbers, they’re absolutely mind bending: Q4 revenues were up 18% year on year; full year 2012 revenues were up 28% year on year. MSM volumes, meaning the Snapdragon chips that have an integrated SoC and cellular component, hit 141 million in Q4, up 11% year on year. For the full year that number is even higher, at a whopping 22%. All this despite the problems Qualcomm faced during the summer due to TSMC’s inability to meet demand for 28 nanometer parts.

Not all is rosy however. Shipments of 3G and 4G devices to developed markets, meaning Japan, North America, and Europe, are up just 4% year over year. It makes sense when you think about it. What does nearly everyone in the developed world have in common? Chances are they likely own a smartphone. Qualcomm’s Chief Financial Officer, William Keitel, told Retuers:

“Despite a somewhat lackluster world economy and despite very intense competition, we’re pretty optimistic on our financial outlook for 2013.”

Cheery words indeed, but the company is forecasting revenue growth for fiscal 2013 to be anywhere between 20% to 26%, which is obviously lower than the 28% that they just reported.
Taking a step back, why is Qualcomm where they are today? Because they had the foresight to develop the Snapdragon platform. Companies used to have to buy several components from multiple vendors and then spend time integrating and testing said parts. Qualcomm basically slapped all those bits and bobs into one product that their customers, the handset makers, could use to get a phone out to market in almost no time.
Who’s Qualcomm’s competition? Samsung, who makes their own system on chip platform known as Exynos. That and there’s Intel. Today they might not be a big player, but just wait a few years.

We’ve been writing about the Sony Yuga for what feels like months. It’s allegedly going to be the Japanese smartphone maker’s flagship device for 2013. It’ll have a quad core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, just like the Nexus 4, 2 GB of RAM, again, just like the Nexus 4, and a 12 megapixel camera. What makes it special is the display: 5 inches diagonal with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. So far we only know of one legitimate smartphone with that display, the HTC J Butterfly.
That’s going to launch in Japan by the end of year, and we have a strong feeling that it’s going to be announced next week on Verizon Wireless as the Droid DNA.

Today’s “news”, if you even want to call it that, is that a Swiss website called Android-Schweiz has somehow managed to get several photos of the Yuga in the wild. First thing you’ll immediately notice about the phone is that it uses glass on both the front and the back of the device. The sleek design sadly comes at a cost, there’s no removable battery. The power button is also quite … interesting. It’s side mounted, like on a Samsung smartphone, but it’s gigantic and made out of a shiny plastic that looks incredibly tacky. Here’s hoping Sony decides to go with something a little bit more classy before they start producing retail units.

Now as for the questions you really care about: How much is the Yuga going to cost? We have no idea. When will you be able to buy it? Again, we have no idea. Chances are it’s going to be announced either at CES in January or MWC in February, and then it’ll land on store shelves in March or April. That’s typically what Sony does. And what version of Android is it going to run? These new photos say 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Every now and then, someone comes up with an idea so absurd that it’s hard to tell whether it’s awesome or just fiction. The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, better known as DARPA, recently had one of those idea. For the concept, DARPA wants to give Soldiers on the battlefield unheard of vision and communication.

Here’s how it works. They want to combine their Pixel Network for Dynamic Visualization, otherwise known as PIXNET, with some cool Android gadgets to give Soldiers an advantage in sight on the battlefield.
According to Yahoo! Finance, the idea was to strap an Android phone on a Soldier’s arm. It would be used to process information from a high tech camera on the helmet. This information would then be fed into a military version of Google Glasses. The result would be near-Predator vision, to include HD vision, near-infrared, infrared, and other forms of sight.
That just sounds incredibly cool. Soldiers having the ability to see through smoke, the night time, and other potentially hazardous conditions would give them an edge on the battlefield. Not to mention it could save quite a few lives. Plus, who wouldn’t want to have the option to use a technology comparable to Predator?

So this “Predator Vision” project from DARPA just helps Soldiers see better?

While that is the coolest feature in this project, it isn’t the only feature. DARPA also plans to use this set up to connect Soldiers to one another while on the battlefield. An example that Yahoo! Finance gave was the ability for leaders to dial into a specific Solder’s equipment and see the battle in real time.
The combination of quick information sharing and Predator vision makes this one of DARPA’s most bold projects. There have been others like it, but they were both expensive and bulky. If this solution becomes viable, it’ll be an edge every military is going to want to have. Is this technology worth looking into? Let us know your thoughts.

Sony has announced software upgrades for its Xperia T and Xperia TX handsets. The company has released  the Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.4) firmware update, which includes a host of features leading to key media improvements. The firmware update will be rolled out gradually, starting with Europe and Asia.

The update also brings on the following features:

• Screen Mirroring: This feature enables users to wirelessly mirror the Xperia T/TX screen to a TV screen via WiFi Miracast, a standard which connects compatible handsets to compatible TVs. You can now enjoy your pictures, videos, games or browse the web, all on your TV straight from any of the two handsets.
• Extended Standby: This feature increases the standby time of the two handsets by almost four times by automatically killing the data connection and rendering most of the battery-consuming apps inactive when in sleep mode. Phone calls and regular messages will still go through and the devices resume normal functionality once the screen is touched.
• HD Voice: This feature, available on the Xperia T only, lets the user enjoy an improved sound quality during calls, as the technology filters distracting background noise.
• Sony Media Applications: Sony has made a few changes to the media applications to provide users with a richer experience: movies can be viewed from the dashboard, the Walkman interface gets dynamic colors matching album arts while the Album app now takes advantage of the Mobile Bravia Engine.

Coming from Sony, this seems to be a pretty refreshing upgrade. See anything you like?

The race to have the biggest 4G coverage is heating up now, as AT&T has just announced they are getting ready to invest $14 billion in their LTE network. Currently, Verizon is leading the way in LTE deployment and speed, but AT&T might be able to change that by 2014.

The plan emphasizes the growth AT&T is getting ready to achieve. They are expecting to cover over 300 million Americans by 2014, which according to the company, is “99 percent of all customer location.” Now, before AT&T is able to make the needed changes and upgrades, they will need the FCC to approve and release additional spectrum, which might be a harder task than simply asking nicely.
Randall Stephenson, AT&T CEO had the following to say about this plan:

This is a major commitment to invest in 21st Century communications infrastructure for the United States and bring high-speed Internet connectivity — 4G LTE mobile and wireline IP broadband — to millions more Americans. We have the opportunity to improve AT&T’s revenue growth and cost structure for years to come, and create substantial value for shareowners.

The end result is that, hopefully, users will have a choice between AT&T’s huge LTE 4G network and similar LTE networks offered by the competition, including T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon – all four major U.S. mobile operators are investing in 4G LTE technology, with T-Mobile being the last one to join the party.

Some of those Sprint customers that are already rocking a Galaxy Note 2 may not have the multi-window feature enabled on their shiny new phablet – an issue spotted with other Galaxy Note 2 as well, but an issue that can be fixed with an update.

And Sprint has just such an update available for you at this time, software version L900VPALJC that fixes various issues and enables the expected feature. Here’s the changelog of this update, as posted by Sprint:

But don’t expect any miracles! We’re not looking at Android 4.2 Jelly Bean here, and it’s too early to talk about anyway given that Android 4.2 is not even out yet for current Nexus devices.
Instead it’s a minor update that will improve your Galaxy Note 2 experience. Did you get it already?

The tablet market has exploded over the last year. What began as a niche market with expensive tablets has evolved into companies making tablets that people on budgets can afford. We went from $700 tablets to $300 seemingly overnight. The kicker is that the $300 tablets are still amazing pieces of technology. With such low prices, it brings one to wonder which tablet actually makes their manufacturer the most money. So let’s take a look at the flagship devices from various mobile operating systems. The iPad, the Nexus 7, and the Microsoft Surface.

According to IHS, the Nexus 7 costs $152 to build. That’s pretty cheap compared to the others. However, the Nexus 7 also sells for less than the others. With the $199 model and the $249 model, the Nexus 7 brings in anywhere from a $45 to $100 profit.
IHS puts the cost of the iPad from $316 to $408 depending on which model you buy. For the 16GB WiFi model, the price is around $500. So the profit made from that is just under $200. For the 64GB WiFi and 4G model, they make about $300.
When we first wrote about the Microsoft Surface, it was estimated that the cost was $271. However, back then we believed the tablet would go in the $300-$400 range. We were mistaken, as the Microsoft Surface currently goes for around $700 for the 32GB model. IHS has a new estimate that the Microsoft Surface costs $284 in total. That means that the Surface makes over $400 per sale.

So the Microsoft Surface makes the most money per tablet?

According to current prices on Google and IHS, yes. Each company does go at it from different angles, though. Google and their Nexus tablets aim more for Google cloud services like Google Music and Google Drive. The cost of those to the consumer helps make up for the really cheap prices.
The Microsoft Surface tablet and the iPad are direct competitors. Same price range, same relative tablet features and specs. Where Microsoft wins is the cost of materials. While the Microsoft Surface costs $280 to make, the lowest range of iPad costs $300, with the most expensive model putting Apple back $400 a piece.
So the question really is, which company has the best strategy? iPad and Microsoft Surface tablets go for luxury value. Google goes for the more financially frugal among us, but gives us limited storage to push their other services. Who does it best? Let us know what you think in the comments.

The unimaginable has happened. Google went offline shortly this November 6th. Actually, Google does experience limited outages one time or another, although given Google’s reputation as a big technology company, this kind of thing is usually considered unthinkable by users. Can’t access your Gmail for just five minutes, and you’re probably pissed. What more if Google searches or other services don’t work?

Especially now that our mobile devices are always connected and reliant on Google services, any outage or downtime will be easily noticed. Now that businesses are moving their operations to the cloud — such as with Google Apps — any downtime will lead to decreased productivity and even lost revenues.
A couple of days ago, Google had a limited outage of about 27 minutes in some regions. According to network engineer Tom Paseka, who wrote an explanation at the Cloudflare blog, this was due to “route leakage.” Tom writes that the Internet’s “glue” is basically built on trust. The Border Gateway Protocol, which announces which IP addresses belong to each autonomous network, supposedly establishes routes from one network to another. In the case of the Google outage, an upstream provider based in Indonesia had a glitch, which then spread across the Internet at large, due to the wrong routing information being sent to other providers.
Said upstream providers were quickly notified of the situation, and were able to address the issue. In all but three minutes of the fix, the Internet went back to normal for the affected parties. Tom estimates that about 5% of Internet users were affected, mostly from Hong Kong and nearby countries.
This was not a malicious hacking attempt, says Moratel, which was the provider in question. Rather, it was a hardware glitch.
All this underscores the vulnerability of our connected systems in the light of Internet outages, whether these are enterprise systems or consumer devices that rely on information from the cloud. With everything going to the cloud — our emails, documents, messaging services, and whatnot — any outage can lead to severe repercussions. Or at the very least, we could be subject to inconveniences.
This leads me  to ask. If Google were to go offline for a day, would you be able to cope? Will you miss anything on your smartphone or tablet if you can’t get online, or can you get by with doing stuff on the device itself, independent of an Internet connection?

As Android games become more and more like traditional home video games, players are discovering that touch screen controls just don’t have the same tactile comfort offered by console video games. That’s about to change, thanks to the Nyko PlayPad, a $40 Android game controller which connects to your device over Bluetooth.

Much like the MOGA, the PlayPad attempts to make mobile gaming more accessible by providing a controller that is familiar to all gamers. Additionally, The PlayPad Pro (pictured above) features a layout near identical to that of an Xbox 360 controller.
The PlayPad also includes several different hardware modes that make the controller compatible with multiple types of games and devices, including iOS titles that support iCade. Unfortunately, the PlayPad does require Android 3.0 or higher, leaving plenty of gamers with Gingerbread devices out of luck. Nyko has also released an application called Playground which allows gamers to map touch controls to the PlayPad, but the application is only compatible with Android 4.0 devices.
At $40, the Nyko PlayPad gives you a capable controller for a great price. At this time, it appears that Nyko is charging the same price for both the PlayPad and the PlayPad Pro, and there’s no telling how long this will last. The PlayPad controller is currently available from Gamestop and Amazon.

TV viewing has stopped being just about a classic TV set and a boring living room for a while, with countless new devices across the world now supporting live streaming of TV channels, as well as many other ways of juggling with video content.

The latest service to allow TV consumers to enjoy their favorite content anytime and anyway they want is Virgin TV Anywhere. Launched by Virgin Media in the UK, this provides Brits with access to up to 45 channels (for now), as well as to 4,000 hours of on-demand services.
Unfortunately, the number of devices supported by Virgin TV Anywhere is not as generous as we would have expected, with Android being by far the most notable absence from the list. Virgin Media’s disrespect to our favorite mobile OS is that more hurtful when thinking that there’s a TV Anywhere dedicated app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.
Windows-based PCs and laptops, but also Apple’s Macs have their own browser-based portals, while UK Android users will just have to wait until “sometime next year” to get their own app. Not cool, Virgin, not cool at all!


Still, if you’re not planning on using TV Anywhere on an Android, you should know that you’ll need a Virgin TV subscription to access the service on your desktop or laptop, and an additional TiVo box to make it work on your mobile device.
Out of the total 45 channels available, there are only 25 supported by both the mobile app and desktop browser for live streaming, including ESPN, British Eurosport, CNN and Cartoon Network. Sky Sports 1 through 4 and all the Sky Movies channels are only accessible on laptops and computers, while the sole UK terrestrial channel included is Channel 5 (both on PCs and via the app).
Sky On Demand is the pack leader when it comes to on-demand content, but you’ll also be able to watch past programs from BBC or ITV. Other perks for mobile users include the ability to record and manage favorite shows remotely, rate programs with a Thumbs Up/Down feature, share what you’re watching on Facebook or Twitter, and even use your devices as remote controls for your TiVo boxes.

Virgin TV Anywhere only lets users register up to two devices for the service, which can however be changed monthly. You can therefore make use of the service on your iPhone and Mac for one month, and then you can access it on a PC and iPad the next month, and so on and so forth.
Finally, let’s also mention that, besides the somewhat limited content on the go and the lack of Android support, Virgin TV Anywhere has another major weakness. The service doesn’t support 3G streaming for mobile devices, so you’ll need Wi-Fi at all times.
All in all, this is great news for anyone craving for a solid Sky Go alternative, but Virgin Media has a lot of extra work to do to make TV Anywhere as cool as it could (or should) be. Do you guys agree? Are you as pissed as we are that there isn’t an Android app “yet”?
